What Are Solid State Batteries?
Electric driving technology is constantly evolving, and solid-state batteries look to be the next big idea in eco-friendly engineering. Instead of liquid, they use a solid electrolyte, which means the cell is safer on every ride. While they use lithium, they’re not lithium-ion batteries, so they’re considerably lighter with higher performance. We also expect to see improved range figures because of the new battery pack’s higher gravimetric energy density, which refers to the amount of energy stored in the cell per unit mass.
Mercedes-AMG® Begins Testing
Mercedes-AMG® has a long history of innovation, and the innovative technology of these models is expected to increase range, boost performance, and set a new standard for electric luxury vehicles. In collaboration with Factorial engineers, the Mercedes-Benz team is putting the first vehicle with a lithium-metal solid-state battery on the road. Lab tests were first conducted in the winter of 2024, and road tests began in 2025 using a Mercedes-Benz EQS as the test vehicle. This setup is expected to have an additional 25% range over traditional batteries, with further passive battery cooling capacity changes. That means an estimated total range of over 621 miles in a vehicle built for tomorrow.
